It Might Be Insensitive…But Art is Free Expression, Right?

Came across this in my weekly newsletter from Indian Country Today. I don’t agree with ICTMN that what this artist did is ‘cultural appropriation,’ but I do feel it was incredibly insensitive of him to even consider this to be acceptable art. I wonder what the response would’ve been from the Black community if he’d inserted himself into artwork of southern slavery….  Art is freedom of expression – but is there a line that can be crossed or  even drawn? Debatable. I, for one, don’t like this piece; I feel he’s poking fun at us or, perhaps, does not fully comprehend the trickle-down effect of his actions…

Have our people not suffered enough humiliation at the hands of the Europeans?
